Health Savings Accounts, available since 2003, allow employees to accumulate funds on a tax-incented basis in an interest-bearing account to pay for medical expenses that are not covered by health insurance or are part of a deductible or co-insurance amount. They are often paired with a high-deductible health plan to form a so-called "consumer-directed health plan."
